The Week 1 That Was In Fantasy Football

by Lightfoot Simmons

2009 Week 1 Fantasy Football Recap

Well as everyone knows Week 1 just ended and for some fantasy football owners it was a great week and for others…..well I’m sure they’d like to forget about Week 1. As for me, my fantasy football teams went 5-2; not bad for a first week.

WEEK 1 RECAP

So what all happened in Week 1? Well here are the highs and lows for Week 1 in Fantasy Football:

WEEK 1 HIGHS

  • Drew Brees threw six touchdown passes against Detroit.
  • Adrian Peterson rushed for 180 yards and three touchdowns. (Note: AP gets Detroit next week.)
  • The Eagles defense helped fantasy football owners take home a victory.
  • Tony Romo is still a fantasy star even without Terrell Owens.
  • We saw the second reincarnation of Cadillac Williams against the Cowboys.
  • Ravens QB Flacco lit up the Chiefs DEF with 307 passing yards with 3 TDs.
  • Steelers QB Roethlisberger lit up the Tennessee DEF with 363 passing yards.
  • WRs Jennings, Wayne and Holmes didn’t let their fantasy football owners down with their great games.

WEEK 1 LOWS

  • Top RBs Matt Forte, Steven Jackson, Chris Johnson, Clinton Portis, Steve Slaton and Michael Turner failed to produce for their fantasy football owners.
  • QBs Jake Delhomme, Jay Cutler & Kyle Orton did not perform that well at all for their owners.
  • Eagles QB Donovan McNabb suffered a fractured rib against the Panthers.
  • Cardinals QB Kurt Warner looked very old against the Niners.
  • Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson was in and out during the second half with a sprained ankle.
  • Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez will miss several weeks with an injured knee.
  • Chicago LB Brian Urlacher is done for the season with a dislocated wrist. Bears also lost LB Pisa Tinoisamoa as he sprained his right PCL against the Packers.
  • Steelers S Troy Polamalu sprained his left MCL against the Titans.
  • Sleeper pick Giants WR Hakeem Nicks suffered a sprained left foot against the Redskins. The Giants also lost sleeper RB pick Danny Ware as he left the game with a dislocated elbow injury. Both should only be out a few weeks.

WAIVER WIRE PICKUPS

Need some help on your team due to players getting hurt or just have some that underperformed last week. Here are some great waiver wire pickups to target.

  • Mike Bell, RB, Saints
  • Jeremy Shockey, TE, Saints
  • Justin Gage, WR, Titans
  • Kenny Britt, WR, Titans
  • Nate Burleson, WR, Seahawks
  • Earl Bennett, WR, Bears
  • Johnny Knox, WR, Bears
  • Cadillac Williams, RB, Buccaneers
  • Michael Clayton, WR, Buccaneers
  • Mario Manningham,  WR, Giants
  • Laurent Robinson, WR, Rams

Well here’s hoping everyone has a better Week 2 in their fantasy football leagues this upcoming week…that is unless you’re playing against me!
